Kinetic typography, explained for people who just want their LinkedIn post to stop people scrolling

"Kinetic typography" sounds like a design-school term, and the explanations of it usually lean into that: timing curves, typographic hierarchy, the history of Saul Bass title sequences. None of that is necessary to use it well or to understand why it works. Stripped down, kinetic typography is just text that moves in a way timed to how it would be read or spoken out loud, instead of sitting still on screen. That's the whole concept. The rest is craft details about doing it well versus doing it annoyingly.

Why moving text gets watched when a static text card doesn't

A static slide of text asks the viewer to do all the work: decide to read it, control their own pace, and hold attention on something that isn't changing. On a feed where the default behavior is scrolling past anything that doesn't immediately signal it's worth a stop, a static text card is very easy to scroll past. Nothing on screen is telling the eye to stay. Text that's moving, appearing, or changing does the opposite: motion is one of the strongest involuntary attention triggers there is, which is exactly why a moving thumbnail or a video autoplay preview gets noticed in a feed full of static images. Kinetic typography borrows that same mechanic for text specifically: the movement itself buys the first second or two of attention that a static card has to earn some other way.

The one rule that matters more than any animation style

Pacing has to match reading speed, not the other way around. This is the single most common mistake in text-to-video content: words or phrases appear and disappear faster than a viewer can actually read them, because the pacing was set to look energetic rather than to be legible. The result is a video that looks dynamic in a thumbnail and is frustrating to actually watch. The viewer either gives up trying to read it or rewatches the same three seconds twice. The fix isn't complicated: time each phrase's on-screen duration to roughly how long it takes to read out loud at a normal pace, not faster. A video that feels slightly less flashy but is fully readable on a first watch consistently outperforms one that looks more energetic and isn't.

Chunking: the other decision that actually matters

The second decision, after pacing, is how you break a paragraph of text into on-screen chunks. Two extremes both fail: showing an entire sentence at once defeats the purpose (it's just a static text card that happens to fade in), and showing one word at a time can feel choppy and hard to follow for anything longer than a short punchy line. The workable middle is phrase-level chunking: breaking text at natural speech pauses (commas, conjunctions, clause boundaries) rather than at a fixed word count. "Most people quit right before the breakthrough" reads and lands differently split as "Most people quit" / "right before the breakthrough" than split word-by-word or shown all at once. This is closer to how a good speaker would naturally pause when saying the line out loud than it is a technical rule, which is really the underlying principle: kinetic typography works best when it mimics the rhythm of speech, not an arbitrary animation timing.

Where this fits: LinkedIn specifically

LinkedIn's feed rewards content that gets an early engagement signal (comments, reactions, dwell time) before it decides how far to distribute a post. So the same "first three seconds" problem that applies to any social video applies here too, with one LinkedIn-specific wrinkle: a meaningful share of LinkedIn video is watched with sound off, in a professional or commuting context where playing audio isn't an option. That makes kinetic typography a better fit for LinkedIn specifically than it might be for a platform where sound-on viewing is the norm: the text itself is the entire message, not a caption layered under a voiceover the viewer might not be hearing anyway. A LinkedIn post that would otherwise be a plain text update is a natural candidate: the words already exist, they were already written to be read, and turning them into a paced, readable video adds motion (and the attention it earns) without requiring an actual video shoot or voiceover recording.

What doesn't need to be kinetic typography

Not everything benefits from this treatment. A long, nuanced argument with a lot of caveats doesn't compress well into paced on-screen phrases: the format rewards a clear, quotable, relatively short piece of writing (a strong opinion, a specific insight, a short story with a clear beginning and end) more than a long explainer with a lot of branching logic. If the source text needs footnotes to make sense, it's probably the wrong candidate for this format; save it for a written post or an article instead, and save kinetic typography for the shorter, punchier things that were already working as a LinkedIn post or a tweet.

A simple way to check if a piece of text is a good fit

Read it out loud, at a normal conversational pace, and time it. If it takes under about 45 seconds to read aloud and has a clear, single point rather than several unrelated ones, it's very likely a good fit for a kinetic-typography video: the reading time gives you a rough sense of the video's natural length, and the single-point structure is what makes phrase-level chunking work cleanly. If it takes several minutes to read or covers multiple distinct ideas, either pick the strongest single excerpt to turn into video, or accept that this particular piece of writing is better left as a written post. That one check (read it out loud, time it, check if it has one point) catches most of the cases where kinetic typography would otherwise be applied to the wrong piece of writing and come out worse for it.
